Counting down to QuickBooks Connect $100k Hackathon: Challenge tracks and prizes

Updated: September 22 and October 27, 2015

The countdown to the 2015 QuickBooks Connect Hackathon has begun! Were excited to announce details to this years $100k Hackathon, including the challenge tracks, prizes and official rules.

When and Where is the QuickBooks Connect Hackathon?

The hackathon is a 2-day event — Sunday, November 1 through Monday, November 2 (the 2 days before the main QuickBooks Connect conference on Nov. 3). Like last year, we’ll be at the San Jose Convention Center in downtown San Jose, CA. Have a hard time getting up on Sunday morning? You’re in luck — we “fall back” from Daylight Savings Time on Oct. 31/ Nov. 1, so you’ll get an extra hour of sleep before you need to get over to the convention center.

Who is Eligible?

The hackathon is open to anyone who is a registered attendee of the QuickBooks Connect conference. You’ll have to agree to some rules, so you also need to be able to do that legally (that usually means you have to be at least 18 years old). (Not registered yet? Click here to sign up! Be sure to select the optional “hackathon” activity after you select the “main day” conference pass.)

Hackathon teams from solo devs to up to 5 team members are welcome. We expect developers with coding skills and creative ideas to attend. Also welcome are designers and accountants and business-minded folks who have an app idea and want to team up with a dev to create the next innovation in QuickBooks apps. If you have ideas for extending the power of the QuickBooks ecosystem and youre willing to work hard for ~36 hours, the hackathon is for you, too.

What Are the Tracks?

We have three challenges for you to tackle. We think they are broad enough that there’s something for everyone. We hope you’ll find them inspiring!

  • Track 1: Existing Apps: If you have an existing SaaS small business app, build an innovative integration with the QuickBooks platform to make your app even more powerful and useful than before.
  • Track 2: New Apps: Create a solution to a real problem faced by small business by leveraging the QuickBooks platform. This brand new app will integrate with QuickBooks Online and address a real customer pain point.
  • Track 3: Solution for Non-Profits: Create a solution to a real problem faced by non-profits by leveraging the QuickBooks platform. Add QuickBooks platform functionality to your existing SaaS app, or build a brand new app that leverages the QuickBooks platform. Either way, your solution addresses a real pain point for non-profits.

Over the coming weeks we’ll have some activities to help you with ideation and getting ready for the hackathon. But in the meantime, you can check out the Intuit Developer Hangout from last week, where we walked through the challenges.

What Are the Prizes?

Just building a great app is its own reward, but we’ve also got some compelling prizes that will add a bit of juice to the competition.

  • Track 1: Total potential value of $20k: $5,000 cash (to be shared evenly among 1-5 team members).
Also, if the winning app is published on the QuickBooks App Store at Apps.com by May 2, 2016: $15k in marketing spend with an Intuit-approved agency.
  • Track 2: Total potential value of $20k: $5,000 cash ( to be shared evenly among 1-5 team members).
